Arusha National Park

A Hidden Gem at the Foot of Mount Meru

Overview

Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and diverse parks, located just 45 minutes from Arusha town. Though smaller in size, the park boasts a remarkable variety of landscapes — from lush montane forests and open savannah to sparkling lakes and the towering Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak.

The park is ideal for day trips and a perfect introduction or wind-down to a northern safari circuit.

Best Time to Visit

  • June to October (Dry Season): Great for wildlife viewing and hiking.
  • November to May (Green Season): Best for birdwatching and photography, with vibrant landscapes.

Things to Do

  • Walking Safari: Unique chance to explore the park on foot with an armed ranger – spot giraffes, zebras, and buffalo up close.
  • Game Drives: View wildlife such as giraffes, bushbucks, colobus monkeys, warthogs, and more.
  • Canoeing on Momella Lakes: Paddle among flamingos and water birds with views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro.
  • Hiking Mount Meru: Multi-day trek offering scenic vistas and fewer crowds than Kilimanjaro.
  • Bird Watching: Over 400 bird species including turacos, flamingos, and hornbills.

Where to Stay

Accommodations range from basic campsites to high-end lodges in and around the park:
